Corona Virus and Christ by John Piper
April, 2020
"My aim is to show why God in Christ is the Rock at this moment in history--in this pandemic of the coronavirus--and what it is like to stand on his mighty love." - John Piper
My family and I traveled to Mexico for a spring break vacation at the beginning of March 2020. As we left, the Coronavirus was something happening in China and much was unknown. Each day of our 7-day vacation, the news reports got closer and closer to home. Travel to and from the U.S. was being restricted, coronavirus headcount was growing by thae day, essential supplies were becoming scarce, and the President was giving daily press briefings.
As we returned home, with worry in our eyes and the smell of antibacterial soap in our noses, we waited at the American Airlines counter in a Mexico airport to go home. There was not an American Airlines attendant in sight. For an hour, we waited. No one came. We checked our phones expecting reports of travel closure from Mexico. Nothing. Finally, 45 minutes before take-off, an attendant came, quietly checked us in, and we started home.
Shortly after returning home, I reached out to a friend to try and make sense of it all. In a matter of days, everything had changed. I was swirling, spiraling really, in a tide of unknowns, developing information, life changes, and fear. As I attempted to pick up some of the pieces with my friend, I joked, “Where is John Piper when you need him?” Surely, he has given a sermon or written a book that could point us in the right direction. I needed a good word. “Anxiety in a man’s heart weighs him down, but a good word makes him glad” Proverbs 12:25. Two weeks later, I received notice that John Piper had written a new book: Christ and the Coronavirus.
This is a good word, y’all. It’s free. Download it. Read it or listen to it. It is well worth two hours of your time. Be encouraged that “the same Sovereignty that could stop the coronavirus, yet doesn’t, is the very Sovereignty that sustains the soul in it” (John Piper, Christ and the Coronavirus).
