  • What is John’s argument in verse 7? Why does being loving mean “one is born of God and knows God”? What are the implications of that?

  • How would you explain John’s thought flow from verse 11 to verse 12?

  • What is the role of the Spirit in verses 14-16?

  • What is the “this” in verse 17? How would you explain verse 17 in your own words?

  • Contrast verse 17 and 18. How would you go about applying these?

  • Consider what verse 18 says about fear. What other verses about fear come to mind? (Examples: Luke 23:40, Acts 13:16, 2 Corinthians 7:1) How can these both be true?

  • How can you put verses 19 and 20 into practice? What brothers are you struggling to love?

  • The emphasis of the command in verse 21 is not “go do”, but rather “the one who knows God does”. How can we make sure we aren’t reading or applying verse 21 in a heartless or empty way?

  • How do these verses help you worship and follow Jesus?
