How would you summarize these verses in your own words? What is John’s main point?
What do you think it means to ask for something “according to his will” (v14)? What impact should this have on your prayers?
Sin that does or doesn't lead to death is a confusing idea (v16-17). Read Hebrews 6:4-6 and Hebrews 10:26 for some helpful clarification. What do you think John is getting at? Why is he worried about this?
What exactly is John telling the readers not to pray for in verse 16? What should we pray for today for those who commit such sins? Why would his readers be inclined to pray otherwise?
John uses a lot of birth language through his letter. List some examples of this. Why do you think he wrote this way?
Reread verse 19 and then read Matthew 28:18-20. How should we understand the present time and Jesus’ commission in light of verse 19?
Why do you think John ends his letter with a warning against idols?
