How would you summarize the text in your own words?
What is the commandment John gives (v5)? What is love according to John (v6)? Explain how these two go together.
In his gospel and in his letters, John likes to reference “the beginning.” Why do you think he does this?
What is the connection between believing that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh (v7) and walking in His commandments (v6)? Explain John’s flow from verse 6 to 7.
John’s central warning comes at the beginning of verse 8. What is it? Where do you need to apply this?
Explain verse 9. What does it mean to “go on ahead”? Why is that contrary to abiding? Where do you see examples of this today?
John speaks of a full reward in verse 8. He seems to explain that full reward in verse 9b. What is the reward? Where is the Spirit in this? Why does John consider this a full reward?
How did Jesus win His full reward? What then does it look like for us to “win” in this life? Why is this victory?
