Discipleship Group Guide - James 4

Ice Breaker: Name someone in your life who seems content. Describe why they seem content to you.

Knowing Self

Bible Reading- James 4

  1. Verse 1 says our passions are fighting, which leads to quarrels and friendship with the world. What are your passions fighting for?  Where do you need God's grace to help you in that fight?

  2. Truth calms our passions, lies inflame them. We often feed lies to our passions, which produces internal and external conflict. What truths about God and His promises do you need to feed your passions? What lies do you need to address?

Knowing God

  1. Contrast James’ portrayal of human actions and character in this chapter with God’s character.

  2. Where is the gospel in this text and how is it a better answer than the worldliness mentioned in the text?

James helps us to see that friendship with the world is enmity toward God and vice versa.

Knowing How to Respond

Group Response: Take turns praying for each group member to enjoy friendship with God and enmity with the world.

Personal Response: Look at verses 13-17. God already knows all of your desires and He is a good Father who gives good gifts to His children. Tell Him what you truly want. If you're uncomfortable asking for what you want, is it because you'll ask wrongly (v3), or is it because you don't trust Him to do it? Acknowledge that to Him also.

Outward Response: This is a sharp chapter. How has God pricked you with it and how can you share that this week?
