Scripture: 1 John 2:28-3:10

  • Open with prayer

  • How would you summarize these verses in your own words?

  • John says we can know that everyone who practices righteousness has been born of God. What role then does obedience play in the Christian life? Why is this not legalistic, and how can we avoid the temptation of legalism?

  • Sin is lawlessness (v4). Are there areas you are content with lawlessness, if so, what are they? What does God’s law say about these things and how can you start practicing it?

  • As God’s son, what kinds of things did Jesus do? (Think more broadly than just miracles.) John says we are also God’s children, what keeps us from doing the same kind things? How could you start doing those things?

  • Spend time talking about 3:6 & 3:9. What conclusions should we draw from these? Christians often fear these kinds of texts, how can we read these without starting to doubt our salvation

  • John makes the point that everyone comes from one of two fathers, who are the two patriarchs? The bible has several examples of good and bad sons. List a few and discuss how those examples can help us interpret this passage.

  • How do these verses help you worship and follow Jesus?

  • Close with prayer
