Scripture: 1 John 2:1-11
Open with prayer
Read chapter 2. How would you summarize what John is saying in verses 1-11?
John says he’s writing to them so that they won’t sin. What is sin and what can an advocate do for those that do sin? Why does it matter that the advocate is righteous?
What is propitiation? How can Jesus be the propitiation for the sins of the world (v2) even though the world doesn’t know him (v3-6 & John 1:10)?
In verses 3-6, we are told how we can have assurance. Why is this not legalism?
Follow the argument of verse 8, why is the commandment new?
What does it mean that the darkness is passing away? How does that impact your view of the world and your role as light in the world (Matt. 5:14)?
John repeatedly warns against the hypocrisy of not obeying the Lord and not loving your brothers. Do you need to repent for failures to love your brothers or for not obeying Christ? How can your group help you in these commands?
How do these verses help you worship and follow Jesus?
